Ross River:
Ross River Dena

The Ross River Dena are included in the Kaska Tribal Council which extends through much of southeastern Yukon and into BC. Traditionally semi-nomadic people, the Dena harvested and camped in the area that is now Ross River. The traditional territory of the Ross River Dena is abundant in wildlife and still provides for the First Nation people. There are several regional dialects of the Kaska language and much work has been done by the Kaska to preserve the language, such as the Kaska Language Dictionary. The Kaska follow the moiety system of Wolf and Crow, much like the rest of the Yukon’s First Nations. The Ross River Dena are known for their unique style of drumming and singing and host many stick gambling events at Coffee Lake, their traditional cultural gathering place.
